swearing birds and moral dilemma
Have you noticed those fast food little birds, the males sport a little black bib, they are cute little birds known as the House Sparrow. Another bird of note is the European Starlings that have yellow beaks for most of the year, tend to flock and have a blackish color. They both have one trait in common, they are introduced species in the North America and tend to take over the nest cavities of native native birds (okay, thats two).
I have a nest of European starlings in a cavity of our apple tree, I watch the parents working non stop feeding the young. The young are past the peeping stage now and can be heard squawking for food. I decided I would put a piece of wood in from of the entrance and see what happens, thats when I decided birds can swear. The parent bird just threw a fit and all the thrashing around finally caused the wood to fall and the bird went back to business. I tried it again, I wanted to see if they would knock the wood down again, but I noticed one parent figured out it could go through another hole above, but the other parent just didn't know what to do.
I had my fun but the moral dilemma starts, I should destroy these bird, there detrimental to the native Blue bird population. I think I have gotten a little soft in recent years and these birds have been some good entertainment in the past month for me to do what I really should.
