California is a big state, it also boasts many beautiful places. I headed down to Visalia, CA a week ago today for a DX convention which started on Friday. Visalia can be reached in one long day from here, but the fellow I was with didn't want to make it one, so on Thursday we had some time to kill. We took the free time and headed to Sequoia National Park but it was still closed due to snow, the drive around the area was nice, the grasses are green and made for some beautiful countryside.

The convention was informative and interesting and I didn't really have much of an idea what to expect. The highlight was the presentation about the Peter One DX expedition. The one who led up to expedition spoke and had photos and videos to share. Peter One is an island off the south pole (www.peterone.com), or a huge mountain covered by a glacier. I worked the folks on the island back in February, so the presentation had more meaning to me.

On our way out of the state we went over to San Francisco and crossed over the Golden Gate bridge, from there we took highway 101 up to the Redwoods and crossed over to I-5 on highway 199. Talk about orchards, there many of them, lemon, orange, mandarin, olive, almonds to name a few. The most fascinating thing about these orchards was the precision the plants were planted. If you look down them, they are perfectly straight, if you look diagonally, the trees are planted such a way to make a line of trees diagonally and they were lined up evenly so that they made a straight line and of course if you look on the side you would see that the line is perfectly straight and no tree or bush is out of line. It was incredible.

On the way down there were many sights, to see, here is Mt Shasta in the northern half of the state
