I used to frequent a survival oriented web site, many are Christian, God fearing people. I have returned there recently, but with a whole new world view, so when the discussions turn religious, it takes on a whole new meaning. These folks wager when the "shit hits the fan" (SHTF) scenario or "the end the workd as we know it" (TEOTWAWKI) will occur, majority figure between now and to around 2020, most think 2012 possibly due to the Mayan calender or the possibility that Hillary will become POTUS.

I am of the mind that something can and will happen, human poplulations are exploding and this planet has a finite carrying capacity. We have pushed the envelope with oil and technology and will for some time to come, I just don't believe it can continue at this pace. Population dynamics of other animals gives us a insight on what we may expect once the carrying capacity is achieved.

One person posted this great picture of the Crab Nebulae

His interpretation of this photo is that it proves there is a God. Not all are God beleivers on this forum, there is a pool of agnostic folks there to temper the armageddon passion. One particular post caught my attention:

This thread reminds me of a conversation I had with some Jehovah's Witnesses. It when something like:

Me: "If god is such a great guy, why did he knowingly create a world that contains so much suffering?"

Them: "No, no. It's not his fault. He gave us free will. The power to choose good or evil."

Me: "Oh? When a defenceless child is raped by an adult, how much choice does he/she have? God could easily use his power to protect them, but he chooses not to intervene. If I knowingly allowed such a thing to happen, I would be considered evil."

At that point they didn't want to talk to me anymore.

Comments:
God only makes sense if our understanding of him is completely wrong - which I think, if there is a God, is the most likely scenario.
